Estelle Phillips graduated from our Complete Makeup Artist Program in 2015. Since then, she has worked with high-profile models Doutzen Kroes and Jordan Barrett, been quoted in The Globe and Mail as an industry expert, and her artistry has been featured on the popular lifestyle blog, The Coveteur. Estelle currently balances her editorial work with being a makeup artist at Toronto’s LAC+Beauty, one of the city’s top beauty destinations. We caught up with Estelle to hear more about what inspired her to pursue her craft, and what she loved most about attending CMU.
What’s your favourite thing about being a Makeup Artist?
There are too many things, don’t make me choose! One of my favourite things would have to be the friendships that this career has opened me up to, with fellow makeup artists, other creatives in the industry, clients, it has really enriched the relationships in my life. I also will never tire of the feeling you get when your client looks in the mirror and feels absolutely beautiful. It’s such a rush of energy, and is so gratifying knowing you could be a part of making them feel that way.
What inspired you to pursue a career in makeup artistry?
Makeup has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Being a competitive dancer from a young age I was exposed to a lot of makeup. Going through high school I would procrastinate by spending hours doing different makeup looks on myself, instead of doing my homework. The thing about makeup is that it’s never felt like work to me, it’s always been second nature. I’m so impacted by the power of makeup and the confidence it has provided me with, therefore I love that I have a job where I can share that experience and feeling with others.
What did you enjoy most about attending CMU?
The freedom of creativity. It was so refreshing to attend a school each day where I felt I could be 100% myself. CMU has curated such an open and inspirational environment for future makeup artists to discover themselves, their style, and their strengths in. Learning in small class environments, and being taught by teachers who are successful artists in the industry was such a unique and motivational experience.
What have you been working on since graduating from CMU?
After graduating from the Complete Makeup Artist Program, I made the decision to pursue fashion and beauty makeup. I’m focused mostly on client-based work, with editorial work on the side.
What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
I hope to continue to grow and learn every day as an artist, and share my love and knowledge of this art with as many people as I can!
