Oscars 2022: Donald Mowat Nominated for Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Dune

The nominations for the 94th Academy Awards are in and, if you’ve seen Dune, it’s no surprise that honorary CMU board member Donald Mowat has been nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for his work on the film. Donald, who is nominated alongside Love Larson and Eva von Bahr, brought the characters from Frank Hubert’s epic sci-fi novel to life for the big screen through dazzling makeup and special effects artistry. The makeup, at times naturalistic and tribal-inspired and at other times out-of-this-world and nearly mythological, is always awe-inspiring.

The star-studded movie featuring Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa and Oscar Isaac is also nominated for 10 other Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Original Score.

We can’t wait to watch the Oscars on March 27, 2022 and we wish Donald and everyone who worked on Dune (including CMU alum, Rocky Faulkner) the best of luck! Learn more about Donald Mowat’s process and work on the Oscar-nominated film in the video below.
